Schools and Communities

Recognizing the fact that school and community planning are predominantly conducted mutually exclusive of each other, but are inextricably linked, the Local Government Services division has been facilitating regular joint meetings with representatives from local governments and school districts since 2003. The goal of these meetings is to enhance communication and cooperation between the two entities. Through our initial work with schools and communities we have conducted several surveys and collected a large amount of information about the potential for greater communication and coordination between community and school planners.
In the coming months, Local Government Services staff will be creating a resource center that will provide local government and school district leaders with access to information and resources to encourage and facilitate greater communication and cooperation between the two entities. The resource center will serve as a clearinghouse for current publications, links to organizations and related resources and local and national examples of best practices. In addition, we hope that the online resource center will also help schools and communities work together to 1) improve educational outcomes; 2) promote a greater community involvement and sense of community; and 3) improve student health.
