Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning
Last modified Friday, October 03, 2008 15:11
Bicycling and walking have become realistic modes of transportation as traffic congestion becomes more severe. While cyclists and pedestrians can use almost any regional transportation corridor, many facilities are not equipped or safe enough to support this mode of transportation. ARC has been promoting safe, functional and regional bicycle and pedestrian planning since 1973 and continues to update its process to address new needs and trends.

Bike Buddy Pilot ProgramOffered through RideSmart, this free service matches beginner and experienced cyclists so that they can commute to work together. The program is designed to take the mystery out of commuter cycling, encourage more residents of the Atlanta region to try bicycle commuting, and to ultimately increase the amount of trips made by bicycle. NOTE: Currently the Bike Buddy Pilot Program is only available to commuters who work in the Emory University/Clifton Road Corridor area of DeKalb County. A region-wide program is expected in late 2009.
Safe Routes to SchoolSafe Routes to School (SRTS) is a program created by the federal transportation bill, SAFETEA-LU. The Program's goal is to increase the number of children in grades K-8 who bicycle and walk to school by increasing awareness, developing locally-driven and supported programs, improving bicycling and walking conditions near the qualifying schools, and evaluating at the project and Program levels.
Between 2001 and 2008, ARC funded a regional SRTS Program called KidsWalk, managed by PEDS. The program continues to operate and educates schools, parents, and children on pedestrian safety; walking audits around the schools to determine safe routes to walk; and an annual walk to school day event.
A statewide SRTS Program is managed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Click here for more information about GDOT's SRTS program.
Inventory of Pedestrian Facilities Around Transit
In Spring 2004, ARC kicked off an inventory of pedestrian facilities around regional transit (rail stations, bus stops, and transit centers). This includes data on surrounding land uses and the type and condition of the facilities and pedestrian crossings. ARC completed data collection of 37of 38 MARTA rail stations in Fall 2004 and an inventory of 10 key bus transfer centers/locations in Fall 2005.
