Collective Strength Celebrated at ARC State of
the Region Breakfast
More than 1,100 business, civic, elected and nonprofit leaders explored the key issues and challenges facing metro Atlanta and celebrated the region’s collective strength at The Atlanta Regional Commission’s State of the Region breakfast on Friday, Oct. 30.
The theme of the event was “Collective Strength – Winning the Future Together.” The keynote address was delivered by Sevaun Palvetzian, CEO of CivicAction in Toronto. She shared her experiences using collaboration to spark regional efforts to improve the Greater Toronto area.
During the event, ARC released the results of the third annual Metro Atlanta Speaks public opinion poll, which provided key insights into the priorities and desires of metro Atlanta residents. Among the key findings of the survey:
- Transportation remained the region’s top concern for the second-straight year, with 27 percent of respondents saying it was the biggest problem facing the region.
- Metro Atlanta residents are generally upbeat about where they live, with 67 percent of respondents rating the region as a good or excellent place to live, and 76 percent rating their neighborhoods as good or excellent places to live.
- Support for public transit is strong, with 91 percent of respondents saying improving public transit is important to metro Atlanta’s future.
The agency also presented the 17th annual Developments of Excellence awards to four projects. The top honor went to Ponce City Market, a mixed-use development in a former Sears warehouse in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood.
Bill Bolling, founder and longtime leader of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, was named the second recipient of the Harry West Visionary Leadership Award.
ARC’s Millennial Advisory Panel members challenged attendees and the public to host or attend a Civic Dinner Party and join in an effort to spark important conversations to lead to action. Only by coming together, the panel members said, can we develop creative ideas that move our region forward.
